Many women begin experiencing symptoms of pre or perimenopause several years before menopause occurs. The age when the signs of premenopause occur varies among women. Some women experience the symptoms of perimenopause in their early thirties, while other women may notice menopausal signs in their forties, and still other women never experience any changes during menopause.
Women who have had hysterectomies with one or both ovaries removed usually experience immediate surgical menopause, as will some hyterectomized women whose ovaries were left intact.
The Symptoms of Peri-Menopause
* Hot flashes, night sweats, coldness
* Irregular periods that can be heavy, light, shorter or longer cycles
* Difficulty sleeping either getting to sleep or staying asleep
* Mood changes, anxiety, depression, irritability
* Heart palpitations (if you experience any heart disturbances, always consult a physician)
* Dry skin and/or hair loss
* Loss of or decreased sexual desire
* Vaginal dryness
* Incontinence
There are many other symptoms that women may experience during the pre-menopause years. Sometimes the symptoms of menopause can be mimicked by other conditions–commonly thyroid disorders–so it’s important anytime you experience changes that are different for you that you consult your physician.

Darcie Ostrander says:
I am 30 and two years ago I had a partial hysterectomy. The doctor left my ovaries but took everything else. This past year has been the worst. I feel like a fifty year old woman (hope that doesn’t offend anyone), but I can’t seem to get my doctor to understand what I am going through. They think it’s in my head but I know my body. The doctors have ran all types of hormone test and say that I am fine. But I know otherwise. My doctor even tried to put me on klonopin which I later found out was an anti-depressant. Why won’t anyone listen. I am going nuts. I sweat non-stop(especially on the hand, underarms and feet). I have gained probably 5 lbs. a year and I have always been able to burn my weight off, but I don’t have the energy to anymore. I also have sore breasts alot and went for a checkup and found out that I have like 7 cysts but my doctor didn’t seem too concerned and simply said to cut back on the caffeine. I am going crazy. My hair is falling out more so thatn before. I don’t really have any problems sleeping, as a matter of fact I go to bed earlier than I used too because I always feel worn out. I get light headed and dizzy and sometimes I have what I think are hot flashes but I’m not sure. I also am cold alot but am sweating at the same time. Please explain to me whats going on and how long this could last. Is menopause worse than the pre-menopause? Please let me know. Thanks, Darcie.
